Arriving
I’ve not been here long and already I have so much to say.
The ride back from the airport was interesting. All the WM students met, and a taxi driver took us to our apartments. The cards are all so small, and they drive extremely close together—sometimes, even three cars side by side on a two lane road. Cars would pass just to fill small gaps, and everyone was tailgating. Sometimes it was a little bit scary.
First impression—the Sicilian landscape was torn up by construction and factors. It looks as if all the soil had been overturned from some reason or another. However, Siracusa is absolutely beautiful. It is a true city with city blocks fill with very old buildings. The streets are very narrow, which explains the small cars. Many streets have no sidewalk, and people have no qualms about passing close to pedestrians in their cars.
We met a woman, Joanna (sp?), at our apartment. The front door is this enormous wooden door, although only a small part to the bottom right actually opens with our keys. We are on the second floor, although judging by the number of stairs, it is probably the third or even the fourth.
Our apartment is HUGE. It used to be a hotel. There are four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a dining room, living room, kitchen, and deck. There is a second floor above the kitchen that holds one of the bedrooms, one of the bathrooms, and a deck. The deck has another set of iron stairs that leads to the rooftop. Almost every window has a balcony. It got lucky enough to snag one of the rooms with AC.
